This song represents many things. It represents the love and happiness I share with my friends and family, the beliefs that I hold true and dear to myself, and most of all, my decree to always stay true to myself, to be a good person, to spread joy and happiness, to strive to be better each and every day, and to never be afraid to creatively express myself.
This song goes into detail regarding how my wants and desires never seemed to align with those of my peers. It talks about how the people I hold dear to me seem to understand me the best out of anybody, and how my optimistic and unwavering view of life and faith was molded by them. It talks about my distain for those who seek only to separate people, and claim that the basis of life is laid out by societal norms and the perceived worth of peer approval and worthless belongings.
Finally, it ends with my promise to keep my faith, my hope, and my spirit through any peril in life, and to actively avoid the pitfalls of the modern world, with the knowledge that those who truly care about me will join me in this pursuit.
lyrics
we always knew we were different
even when we were young
a simple shot at our own lives
is all we really want
I see life through a black and white view
not a glimmer or a spark in a gray hue
you seem to get it just the way I do
a name for our lives, brand new
so as we run with the leaves
finish line is all we seek
slicing on through thick and thin
won't let that blade break our skin
the weight of the world
we'll see it through
and I promise to bear that burden
if you bear it too
it seems they adore
all that we despise
they speak of the world
and they preach with closed eyes
try and make us believe
that life is a puzzle
and they say "follow me, get a piece,
or in all you desire you will struggle."
so I made up a list
if we follow it close
we can play out our lives
before we give up the ghost
make of our lives the most
until our hearts cease to go
so I made up a list
if we follow it close
we can play out our lives
before we give up the ghost
make of our lives the most
until our hearts won't go
so run with the leaves
stomp them off of the trees
keep your faith and your hope
as we brave the unknown
and whatever you do
remember what I told you
through all I am, my roots and my stem
I will never be like them
(I will never be like them)
